Join the movement of European cities engaged for food sovereignty and food democracy! Participate in the first edition of Mouans-Sartoux Food Forum « A table ! » on 26-28 September 2022 and make local authorities’ voices heard at EU level.
The EU food system is today at crossroads. Food prices are surging, the threat of food insecurity is looming and millions of Europeans are dependant on food banks. In the meantime, numerous scientific studies demonstrate the harmful impact of industrial food on people’s health, the number of farmers in the EU is plummeting and IPCC reports undoubtedly stress that climate change puts Europe’s food resilience at serious risk in the next years.
In this stark context, calls from key public figures for Europe to act swiftly and boldly to ensure the continent’s food security and sovereignty have now become a common place. These pressing challenges shed a new light on the European Union’s « Farm to Fork Strategy » and upcoming EU legislative proposals.
However, despite the current emergency, there is a need to take a step back, reflect and debate, as today’s decisions will most likely have long-lasting impacts.
What type of food sovereignty do we want for Europe? Should we pursue a short-sighted approach to our food security, regardless of environmental and health costs? Or should we opt for alternative production and consumption models, rooted in territories, based on agroecological tenets as well as more organic and plant-based intakes?
European local authorities, whether urban or rural, are today engines of the transition towards sustainable local food systems, as they already implement innovative as well as effective public policy solutions. Ensuring a fairer access to quality food for all, building resilient agroecological food systems and developing a more participatory food governance are not mere objectives but realities taking shape on the ground.
Taking stock of their achievements and rich experience, their voices need to be further heard and promoted at EU level. This is why the city of Mouans-Sartoux invites you to join the movement of local authorities engaged for food democracy and sovereignty, and to participate in its Food Forum « A table! » that will take place in person on 26-28 September 2022.
